From B.Sc. Radiology to your first scanner: a practical roadmap

To become an MRI technologist in India you take a four-year B.Sc. in Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology (three years of study and a one-year internship), register with your state allied health council once registration opens, and build CT and MRI experience in your first job. With three years in CT or IR you can also become a facility's Radiological Safety Officer.
This is the hub for our student series. Each step below links to a fuller guide.
The guides for each step
B.Sc. or diploma: which course should you pick?
The four-year B.Sc. NCAHP's curriculum task force asked for the diploma in MRIT to be phased out within five years.
The NCAHP model curriculum is a Total 4 years or 8 semesters programme
, and diploma holders can join it by lateral entry into the third semester (NCAHP curriculum). The new curricula became mandatory from the 2026-27 academic year, according to Medical Dialogues, and NCAHP chairperson Yagna Unmesh Shukla was quoted saying the big reform is going to come, and we all must be ready
(Medical Dialogues, April 2026).
How admission works is still settling. The curriculum says selection should be on NEET merit, but reports on when that applies to each course differ. Check the prospectus of each university you apply to.
What happens in the internship year?
A 2,400-hour rotation through every imaging area. It is where most students first touch a CT or MRI console, and it decides your first job.
Two months of MRI goes fast. Students who arrive knowing the safety zones and able to plan a brain on a simulator get far more out of it. Our guide to hands-on MRI practice before your first posting has a four-week plan.
Do you need to register with NCAHP in 2026?
Yes, once it opens. The 2026 registration regulations are notified, but registration had not started when we checked, because other regulations and many state councils were still pending.

What does AERB require from you?
X-ray and CT equipment must be operated by someone trained in radiation protection, and three years of CT or IR experience opens the RSO route.
AERB says X-ray installations need a radiologist, related medical practitioner or X-ray technologist with adequate knowledge of radiation protection
to operate the equipment, and lists an X-ray technologist with three years of CT or IR experience as qualified to be the RSO of a CT or IR facility (AERB). Take radiation safety seriously early: in a 2014 survey only 32% of Indian technologists had received formal radiation safety training (Muthusami and colleagues).
What does your first job look like?
Usually a radiographer or CT/MRI technician post, supervised at first. Typical MRI technician pay on AmbitionBox is ₹3.5–3.9 lakh a year, and freshers start lower.
| Post | Pay level | Essential qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Radiographic Technician Grade I, AIIMS (CRE 2025) | Level 6 | B.Sc. (Hons) Radiography, or diploma with 2 years' experience |
| Senior and Chief Radiographer (pay commission summary) | Promotional posts | Experience in the lower grade |
Private hospitals and diagnostic chains hire more people than government does, and many look for one person who can cover both CT and MRI. AmbitionBox puts the typical MRI technician band at ₹3.5–3.9 lakh (AmbitionBox). Your resume and interview preparation decide which door opens first.
How do you move into CT or MRI?
Ask for the rotation, keep a protocol log, and learn the physics and safety before you are rostered on the scanner.
Can you work abroad with an Indian degree?
Yes, but each country has its own gate. The UK has an HCPC international route; the US ARRT accepts only candidates who meet its exact education requirements.
| Country | Gate | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | HCPC international registration | Departments recruited 14% of band 5 staff internationally in one year (SoR census). |
| United States | ARRT certification | International candidates must meet the same ethics, education and exam requirements as everyone else. |
| Gulf | Country licensing authority | Requirements vary by emirate and country. Our guide to working abroad covers the paperwork. |

Frequently asked questions
Is there an age limit for B.Sc. MRIT admission?
The NCAHP model curriculum sets a minimum age of 17 and a maximum of 30. Individual universities and entrance exams may apply their own rules, so check the prospectus.
Can a diploma holder still get into a B.Sc.?
Yes. The NCAHP curriculum allows lateral entry to the third semester for candidates with at least a two-year full-time recognised diploma in medical imaging technology or radiography.
What CPD will I need after registration?
Careers360 reported that the 2026 registration regulations require at least 15 hours of continuing professional development a year to renew registration every five years.
Do interns need to register?
Under the 2026 regulations, as reported by Careers360, graduates going into internship need a temporary registration with their state council once the system is running.
Is an M.Sc. needed to work in MRI?
No. A B.Sc. with good CT and MRI experience is enough for technologist posts. An M.Sc. helps if you want to teach, research or move into senior and applications roles.
